What is Gog & Magog?

(updated 6/15/2019)

What is Gog & Magog?

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. (Ezekiel 38: 1-3) (ESV)

The Lord GOD has declared that He is against a specific person: Gog. That person is from the land of Magog. He is the chief prince (the top leader) of Meshech (aka Magog / Rosh) and Tubal.

While there are different opinions as to the exact location of ancient Meshech, and Tubal, it appears to be located northeast of Jerusalem. It generally refers to regions between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.

Present-day nations in that geographical area include: Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. At the end of this age, Gog will be the top leader of those areas. Note that the specific geographical areas listed are currently Islamic-controlled.

Ezekiel 38 is a prophecy about the end of this age. The Lord tells his prophet to prophesy against Gog. This prophecy is against a specific person but is Gog the Antichrist?

Is “Gog of Magog” the Antichrist?

Most scholars seem to believe that Gog is the Antichrist but in recent studies (2019), the LORD showed me that Gog and the Antichist are two different individuals. Both will fight against Israel in the end times.

The fact that they are two different individuals becomes clear when you examine how each one comes to his end:

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamongog. (Ezekiel 39: 11) (KJV)
Gog is the leader of the Hordes. He will be killed along with his Horde and they will be buried together in the Valley of Hamongog (aka Valley of Armageddon). But the Antichrist has a different fate:

19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. (Revelation 19: 19-20) (KJV)

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. (Revelation 20: 10) (KJV)

Revelation 19 states that the beast (aka the Antichrist) is cast alive into the lake of fire along with the False Prophet. Note that the Antichrist is not killed, he is cast “alive” into the lake of fire for eternal torment. But Gog of Magog is killed and buried in the Valley of Hamongog.

According to Daniel 9:27, the Antichrist will be involved in the establishment of the final 7-year treaty. According to Daniel 7, the Antichrist is not one of the initial 10 kings but he will arise and subdue 3 kings (probably Great Britain, the European Union, and Russia). The Antichrist (beast) will become the spokesperson for the new world order (beast).

Based on Ezekiel 38 & 39, Gog is a leader of a specific geographical area referred to as Magog (he does not rule the entire world). More than likely, Gog of Magog is one of the 10 kings that endorse the 7-year treaty.

The area that Gog rules over has historically been against God’s chosen people (the Jewish people) and in modern times that area has been Islamic-controlled for many centuries. Therefore, Gog is likely to be an Islamic leader – but he is not the Antichrist.

In contrast, the Antichrist will be the spokesperson for the new world order and he is likely to be an individual who embraces and/or tries to unite all religions. Each of the major religions are awaiting a special fulfillment of their prophesies. The Antichrist is likely to pretend to fit that criteria but it will be a “great deception.”

 The Hordes

Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you. (Ezekiel 38: 5-6) (ESV)

Gog is from the land of Magog. He will be the chief leader of Meshek and Tubal. He will lead an army comprised of Persia (Iran), Cush (Ethiopia), Put (Libya), Gomer (Cimmerian: Ukraine & Southern Russia), and Beth Togarmah from the far north (Georgia).

The “Hordes” will be from geographical areas that are historically anti-Jewish and currently Islamic-controlled (also anti-Jewish). Again, it appears that the leader called “Gog of Magog” will be Islamic.

  The Antichrist’s domain

And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. The first was like a lion… another beast, a second one, like a bear…, another, like a leopard… and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong… It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns… there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great [boastful] things. (Daniel 7: 3-8) (ESV)

The Antichrist will become the spokesperson for the terrifying beast. According to Daniel 7:23, the terrifying beast will devour the entire earth. Therefore the Antichrist will exert power over the whole earth whereas the area that Gog of Magog controls is significantly smaller.

The terrifying beast has 10 horns (kings). There will be a union of 10 kings. The little horn (the Antichrist) comes up from among the 10 horns (kings) and uproots 3 of the horns (kings). It appears that Gog of Magog is one of the 10 kings but not one of the 3 that are uprooted.

The 4 beasts from Daniel 7  describe 4 kingdoms that are in existence at the end of the age. These are not past kingdoms because according to Daniel 7:12 the first 3 beasts will be allowed to live for a while longer (after the 4th beast is slain).

It appears that at least 3 of the 4 beasts currently exist: 1- Great Britain (lion), 2- Russia (bear), 3- European Union / Holy Roman Empire (historically centered in Germany) (leopard), and 4- a terrifying beast.

The terrifying beast is most likely to be either:

  1. A union of 10 kings in an attempt to obtain world peace (e.g. after Revelation 9’s 6th Trumpet war kills one third of mankind).
  2. A union of 10 human kings with something part-human (e.g. return of the Genesis 6 Nephilim such as Nimrod/Gilgamesh “as in the days of Noah”).
  3. A union of 10 Islamic leaders embracing fundamentalist Islam with Sharia law (e.g. a revived Islamic Ottoman Empire).

Why would Islam be considered a possibility for being the terrifying beast?

Islam is unlike any other geo-political ideology in the world. The Koran and Hadith actually mandate a jihad war until the world is completely submitted to Islam. The terrifying beast of Daniel 7 uses methods of persecution and conquest which are consistent with how Islamic-controlled areas are governed (historically and currently).

Because of its ideology and its extensive history of acting like a beast (conquering and devouring neighboring nations) until the Islamic Ottoman Empire was defeated and dismantled after World War 1, there is a possibility that the terrifying beast is Islam. At the very least, Islam is likely to play a very significant part of the terrifying beast.

 The Combined Beast

And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to it the dragon [Satan] gave his power and his throne and great authority… And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?”(Revelation 13: 1-2, 4) (ESV)

Revelation 13 describes a single beast that is a combination of Daniel’s 4 beasts. Satan will be the power behind the beast. The Holy Bible describes Satan as the “father of lies” (a great deceiver), therefore people may not realize that Satan is the power behind the beast.

Note that it appears that the Antichrist’s domain will include geographical areas which are not historically or currently Islamic-controlled (Great Britain, Russia, and the European Union).

The USA does not appear to be part of this beast (unless it is one of the 10 kings that sign the 7-year treaty). Daniel 7: 4 describes eagle’s wings being plucked from the lion, after which the lion stopped acting like a beast and was given the heart/mind of a man. In 1776, the USA (eagle) declared its independence from Great Britain (lion). After the USA achieved its independence, Great Britain stopped acting like a beast (conquering / devouring other nations). However, based on Daniel 7, the other 3 beasts continued to be beasts.

 A Divided Kingdom

40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others. 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay. (Daniel 2: 40-43) (NIV)

Based on Daniel 2, the fourth kingdom will be a divided kingdom. This could describe a kingdom that combines humans with something not human (e.g. the Nephilim described in Genesis 6 “as in the days of Noah”) or it could describe two very incompatible groups of humans.

Since Islam is not compatible with any ideology other than Islam, it could never be truly cohesive with any kingdom other than its own. The divided kingdom of iron mixed with clay might very well describe a kingdom that is part Islamic and non-Islamic. This is consistent with the Islamization of Europe that began September 2015.

The Antichrist appears to have begun to put his domain into place via an unprecedented migration of Biblical proportions that began in September 2015 when massive numbers of Islamic people left their Islamic countries and flooded into non-Islamic Europe. Over one million Muslims migrated into Europe within the first 4 months. According to UNHCR data, more than 75% were military-aged men.

Islam does not permit Muslims to have any allegiance to their host countries. Their allegiance can only be to Islam. The Islamic migrants are intentionally not assimilating into Europe… they are occupying it. And they have made significant progress toward establishing Sharia law in Europe.

God is in control

And I will turn you [Gog] about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. (Ezekiel 38: 4) (ESV)

Although God will allow the Antichrist and the 10 kings who embraced the 7-year treaty to have power for a while, God is still in control.

God tells Gog of Magog: “I will put hooks into your jaws and I will bring you out.” When the appointed time comes, God will gather Gog of Magog and his armies to an appointed place. When that happens, Gog of Magog will not be able to resist going to the place where God sends him but he will arrive prepared for war.

The prophesies in Ezekiel and Revelation state that at the end of this age the LORD God will intentionally gather those who are against Him (e.g. the Antichrist, the False Prophet, Gog of Magog, the Hordes) to meet their demise at a place called Armageddon.

In the latter years

In the latter years you will go against the land that is restored from war, the land whose people were gathered from many peoples upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them. (Ezekiel 38: 7-8) (ESV)

Before the LORD God gathers Gog of Magog and the Hordes to their destruction at Armageddon, certain events will take place. “In the latter years” describes the final years of this age.

 Gog of Magog attacks Israel

You [Gog] will advance, coming on like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land [Israel], you and all your hordes, and many peoples with you. 10 “Thus says the Lord God: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme 11 and say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon the quiet people who dwell securely12 to seize spoil and carry off plunder… and the people who were gathered from the nations [the Jewish people], who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell at the center of the earth [Jerusalem]. (Ezekiel 38: 9-12) (ESV)

13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all its leaders will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your hosts to carry off plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?’ (Ezekiel 38: 13) (ESV)

14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy, and say to Gog, Thus says the Lord God: On that day when my people Israel are dwelling securely, will you not know it? 15 You will come from your place out of the uttermost parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army. (Ezekiel 38: 14-15) (ESV)

After the land of Israel has recovered from a great war (e.g. the 6th Trumpet war), Gog of Magog will take notice of the Jewish people safely living in Israel without protective walls (e.g. as a result of the 7-year treaty).

Based on Revelation 19, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and the world’s armies are part of a similar attack against Israel at the end of this age. It appears that they join together with Gog of Magog and the Hordes in their attempt to annihilate Israel.

The final days of this Age

16 You will come up against my people Israel, like a cloud covering the land. In the latter days I will bring you against my land [Israel], that the nations may know me, when through you, O Gog, I vindicate my holiness before their eyes. (Ezekiel 38: 16) (ESV)

18 But on that day, the day that Gog shall come against the land of Israel, declares the Lord God, my wrath will be roused in my anger. 19 For in my jealousy and in my blazing wrath I declare, On that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel... And the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall, and every wall shall tumble to the ground. (Ezekiel 38: 18-20) (ESV)

21 I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Lord God. Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. (Ezekiel 38: 21-22) (ESV)

When the Gog, the Hordes, and the nations come against Israel, the Lord God will unleash His wrath. The wrath of God is described in Revelation 16 and this part of His wrath fits the description of the 6th and 7th Golden Bowls.

The People with Gog of Magog

22 With pestilence and bloodshed I will enter into judgment with him, and I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many peoples who are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and sulfur. (Ezekiel 38: 21-22) (ESV)

In addition to Gog of Magog and his Hordes, there are “many peoples who are with him.” This appears to be a reference to the world’s armies and the Antichrist that join Gog in their attack against the remnant of Israel.

The nations will know the holiness of the LORD

23 So I will show my greatness and my holiness and make myself known in the eyes of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord. (Ezekiel 38: 23) (ESV)

The Lord of Lords

11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords. (Revelation 19: 11-16)

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. (Revelation 19: 17-18)

19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. (Revelation 19: 19-21)

When Jesus Christ (the “Lord of Lords”) returns it will be in power and great glory. He will arrive with the armies of heaven. He will be riding a white horse and arrive in time to save the remnant of Israel at the battle of Armageddon.

Jesus Christ will destroy everyone who sought to annihilate Israel: the Antichrist, the False Prophet, those who took the mark of the beast, those who worshipped the beast’s image, kings, captains, mighty men, and the world’s armies. This appears to also include the destruction of the king called “Gog of Magog” and his Hordes.

Jesus of Nazareth

While both Christians and Muslims await the arrival of Jesus of Nazareth, they are not waiting for the same Jesus.

Although the Koran mentions Jesus of Nazareth (Isa), it considers Jesus to be nothing more than a prophet. It also places Muhammed as a prophet above all other prophets (including Jesus of Nazareth). Anything that conflicts with the teachings of Muhammed is dismissed.

Islam denies that Jesus is the Son of God and it denies that Jesus died on a cross. To emphasize that point, the words “God had no son” are written on the inside wall of every mosque.

Islamic-controlled nations have blasphemy laws that mandate a death penalty for anyone who dares to say that God is a Father, that God had a Son, that Jesus is the Son of God, or that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins (and was resurrected).

Islam teaches that Jesus of Nazareth will return at the end of this age. It also teaches that Jesus will say he was not the Son of God and that He did not die on the cross for our sins. Islam teaches that Jesus of Nazareth will point people to someone else as the Messiah: the Islamic Mahdi.

The Islamic description of Jesus of Nazareth is the Holy Bible’s description of the False Prophet.

The Islamic description of the Mahdi is the Holy Bible’s description of the Antichrist.

The Islamic description of the Antichrist is the Holy Bible’s description of Jesus Christ (but Islam presents Him in a negative way because Islam is anti- Jesus Christ).

Islam also teaches that in the end days, faithful Muslims are to be ready to take the mark of the Mahdi. But the Holy Bible warns that at the end of this age, people must NOT take the “mark of the beast” because anyone who takes the mark or worships the beast will be killed and cast into the lake of fire for eternal torment. PLEASE don’t take the mark of the beast!

11 And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night, these worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.” (Revelation 14: 11)

The Day of the Lord

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to His promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3: 9-13) (ESV)

The Love of God

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.

20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.

21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” (John 3: 16-21) (ESV)

We do not deserve God’s amazing love but He loves us. None of us are without sin and none of us are righteous enough to be in the presence of a holy God. But because of His love for us, God made a way for us to be forgiven: He paid the price of our sins so that we could be reconciled back to Him. There was no other way for our sin debt to be paid.

But His great mercy and grace and love are gifts that we can choose to accept or reject.

Please pray for Everyone (including Muslims)

Please pray with love and compassion that all people will hear the truth about Jesus Christ and learn of God’s great love for them.

Most Islamic people are Islamic by birth and have never been allowed to choose. Many people who converted to Islam were not told the full truth about it before converting but after becoming Islamic no one is allowed to leave Islam.

Although there are Muslims who openly and/or secretly embrace the hate-filled and violent teachings of Islam, not all Muslims do. Many Muslims embrace the earlier peaceful teachings and have no desire to follow the Koran’s final mandate for violence (which officially replaced the peaceful teachings). If they speak against any teaching of Islam, they will be considered an apostate and marked for execution.

Many people will leave Islam when they hear the truth about Jesus Christ.

May the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob give you ears to hear and eyes to see – so that you may recognize the Truth about Jesus Christ!
