What is the King of the North?

Crown - Eqypt

“He will be succeeded by a contemptible person who has not been given the honor of royalty…(Daniel 11: 21)

The previous king of the north will be succeeded by a contemptible person. This person has not been born into power (e.g. royalty). He does not come to power in an honorable way (e.g. he is not elected).

Since the Holy Bible is Jerusalem-centric, the king of the North’s kingdom is north of Jerusalem. It could be directly north (e.g. Turkey) or farther north (e.g. Europe). (See: Why is Jerusalem so Important?)

Based on the context of this scripture and other descriptions provided throughout the Holy Bible, this “king of the North” is the Antichrist. (See: What is the Antichrist?)

A Peaceful Invasion & Intrigue

He will invade the kingdom when its people feel secure, and he will seize it through intrigue. (Daniel 11: 21)

The Antichrist will invade a kingdom when its people feel secure. He will seize it through intrigue. When he invades the kingdom, it will not be with violence (because the kingdom’s people feel secure). He will seize power of the kingdom through intrigue (e.g. by secretly doing something illicit).

Based on this description, the invasion will not be obvious to the nations being invaded. The people of that kingdom will not see it coming. They will be caught off guard.

This appears to be actually happening today: the politically correct and massive invasion of Islamic refugees/migrants leaving Islamic-controlled countries and migrating into non-Islamic nations (the richest provinces). (See: What is this Mysterious Image?)

A Massive War

22 Then an overwhelming army will be swept away before him; both it and a prince of the covenant will be destroyed. (Daniel 11: 22)

There will be a war that involves an overwhelming army. The army and a prince of the covenant (a leader of Israel) will be destroyed.

This appears to reference the same war as Revelation 9: the 6th Trumpet war. It originates at the Euphrates River. It involves 200 million soldiers. It results in one third of mankind being killed. Based on the current world population of about 7.4 billion people, about 2.4 billion people will be killed in the 6th Trumpet war. (See: What is the 6th Trumpet?)

This appears to be currently in the process of being fulfilled. The war that was started on 9/11/2001 originated at the Euphrates River and all the countries that border the Euphrates are currently Islamic. Although it has been going on for more than 14 years, it continues to increase in strength and carnage.

At some point, the deaths from the 6th Trumpet war will total a third of mankind. These deaths may be due to fundamental Islamic terrorists getting access to nuclear weapons (or attacking nuclear power stations). It is also possible that the war will be waged by Islamic-controlled countries against the non-Islamic countries of the world.

Because ISIS and other fundamental Islamic groups are continuing to terrorize the world and randomly kill anyone who refuses to follow Sharia law (even in non-Islamic countries), the world is uniting against that common threat. The world powers are about to provide weapons and military training for the Islamic countries in order to fight the ISIS-type groups. After the Islamic countries are armed and trained by the non-Islamic countries, they will most likely use that strength against the non-Islamic world and attempt to spread Islamic rule (Sharia law) throughout the world. This is in keeping with the mandate of the Koran. (See: What does Islam teach about the End Times?)

An Agreement & Deception

23 After coming to an agreement with him, he will act deceitfully, and with only a few people he will rise to power. (Daniel 11: 23)

If the Antichrist was powerful enough after this war, he would not be agreeing to a peace treaty. He will use the treaty to deceive his enemies long enough to gain an advantage over them. When he is strong enough, he will violate the treaty. With only a few people, he will rise to power.

According to the Koran, treaties are only allowed if Islam is not strong enough to defeat its enemies. The treaties must be temporary (less than 10 years). The treaties are to be used in order to deceptively gain an advantage over Islam’s enemies. (See: Does Islam Promote Peace?)

Based on Daniel 9: 27, this will be a 7-year peace treaty. The Antichrist will be involved in the treaty. After such a massive war, the peace treaty will most likely result in a New World Order. (See: What is the Beast out of the Sea?)

Halfway through the treaty, the Antichrist will violate the treaty.

The Richest Provinces are Invaded

24 When the richest provinces feel secure, he will invade them and will achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did. He will distribute plunder, loot and wealth among his followers. He will plot the overthrow of fortresses—but only for a time. (Daniel 11: 24)

The richest provinces will feel secure due to the peace treaty, that’s when the Antichrist will invade them. This time he will plunder and loot those provinces. He will use deception to achieve what neither his fathers nor his forefathers did.

When he makes his move to invade, the nations will be unsuspecting and unprepared. This is consistent with the methods of war that Islam recommends. It is considered acceptable, even righteous, to use deception in order to gain an advantage over their enemies and further the cause of Islam. (See: Why is 9/11 important to Islam?)

Once the Islamic population has been redistributed across the world (and especially in Europe) via the politically correct invasion, the demographics of the non-Muslim countries will have changed dramatically. Islam will have spread enough to control a fourth of the earth. (See: What is the 4th Seal?)

In addition, the Islamic countries will have already been militarily trained and given weapons by the world powers (in order to fight against ISIS-type groups). The Islamic Mahdi (i.e. the Antichrist) will be poised and ready to activate his violent invasion of the richest nations – which are ALL currently non-Muslim countries.

When this happens, the Antichrist will be successful. He will have plunder, loot, and wealth to distribute among his followers. He will continue to plot to overthrow mighty nations.

The Kings of the North & South Fight each Other

25 “With a large army he [the king of the North] will stir up his strength and courage against the king of the South. The king of the South will wage war with a large and very powerful army, but he will not be able to stand because of the plots devised against him. 26 Those who eat from the king’s provisions will try to destroy him; his army will be swept away, and many will fall in battle. 27 The two kings, with their hearts bent on evil, will sit at the same table and lie to each other, but to no avail, because an end will still come at the appointed time. (Daniel 11: 25-27)

The king of the South will wage war with a large and very powerful army but he will lose. The king of the South will be betrayed from within his ranks. The two kings will sit and lie to each other, their hearts bent on evil.

It is very likely that the king of the North and the king of the South will both be Islamic. There are currently two factions of Islam: Sunnis and Shiites. It is possible that this ongoing battle between the north and south refer to wars between Sunnis and Shiites.

He Rages Against God’s Holy Covenant

28 The king of the North will return to his own country with great wealth, but his heart will be set against the holy covenant. He will take action against it and then return to his own country. (Daniel 11: 28)

The Antichrist will return from the meeting with the king of the South. He will have great wealth. He will take action against God’s holy covenant before returning to his own country. (See: What is Surah 9?)

The Western Coastlands Oppose Him

29 “At the appointed time he will invade the South again, but this time the outcome will be different from what it was before. 30 Ships of the western coastlands will oppose him, and he will lose heart. Then he will turn back and vent his fury against the holy covenant. He will return and show favor to those who forsake the holy covenant. (Daniel 11: 29-30)

The Antichrist will still have some opposition. The ships of the western coastlands will oppose him. The Antichrist will again vent his fury against God’s holy covenant. He will show favor to Jews and/or Christians who are willing to forsake their covenant with Jehovah God.

The Abomination that Causes Desolation

31 “His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. 32 With flattery he will corrupt those who have violated the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him. (Daniel 11: 31-32)

During the first part of the 7-year peace treaty, the Jewish Temple is rebuilt on the Temple Mount and animal sacrifice is resumed. At this point, the Antichrist will abolish the daily sacrifice. Next he will have the “abomination that causes desolation” set up. He will corrupt those Jews and/or Christians who violated their covenant with Jehovah God. The Antichrist will use flattery to manipulate people. Those who know their God will firmly resist the Antichrist.

According to Daniel 9, this will take place halfway through the 7-year treaty. According the Matthew 24, the Great Tribulation begins immediately after the Antichrist sets up the  “abomination that causes desolation.” (See: What is the Great Tribulation?)

Extreme Persecution of God’s Holy People

33 “Those who are wise will instruct many, though for a time they will fall by the sword or be burned or captured or plundered. 34 When they fall, they will receive a little help, and many who are not sincere will join them. 35 Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time. (Daniel 11: 33-35)

During the Great Tribulation, God’s holy people will be severely persecuted. They will be killed by the sword or burned or captured or plundered. God will use this time to refine, purify, and make spotless His holy people. The end of this age will still come at the appointed time.

Based on other scriptures, the Great Tribulation lasts for 3-1/2 years (1,260 days). (See: What is the Great Multitude in White Robes?)

This is a time that calls for faithfulness and patient endurance on the part of God’s people. (See: What is Faithfulness and Patient Endurance?)

He Exalts Himself

36 “The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods. He will be successful until the time of wrath is completed, for what has been determined must take place. (Daniel 11: 36)

Once the Great Tribulation begins, the Antichrist will exalt himself above every god. He will speak unheard-of blasphemies against Jehovah God.

The Antichrist will be successful throughout the Great Tribulation and the Wrath of God that follows it. (See: What are the 7 Golden Bowls?)

He Honors a God Unknown to his Ancestors

37 He will show no regard for the gods of his ancestors or for the one desired by women, nor will he regard any god, but will exalt himself above them all. 38 Instead of them, he will honor a god of fortresses; a god unknown to his ancestors he will honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price. (Daniel 11: 37-39)

The Antichrist will have no regard for the god(s) of his ancestors. He will exalt himself above them all. Instead, he will honor a god of war that was unknown to his ancestors.

Islam was started about 600 years after Jesus Christ was crucified and resurrected. It was created to be the antithesis of Christianity. It honors a god called “Allah” who claims to be the God of Abraham. But Allah is the polar opposite of Jehovah God. “Allah” is a god that was unknown at the time the Holy Bible was written. (See: Do Jews, Christians, & Muslims worship the Same God?) (See: How are Islam & Christianity Different?)

He Invades many Countries (and overcomes them)

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land. Many countries will fall, but Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Cushites in submission. (Daniel 11: 40-43)

The Antichrist will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. He will take over many countries, including Egypt and Israel (the Beautiful Land). Libya, and the Cushites will be submission to the Antichrist. He will not be able to conquer Edom, Moab, and the leaders of Ammon.

Reports from the East & North Alarm Him

44 But reports from the east and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many.

The Antichrist will continue to experience resistance. Although he eventually has success in conquering the king of the South, reports from the east and the north will alarm him. He will become enraged regarding the reports. As a result, he will set out to destroy and annihilate many people.

Even if the Antichrist comes to power in Europe (e.g. Austria/Germany/Hungary), he is expected to eventually rule from Jerusalem during the 2nd half of the 7-year peace treaty. If that is the case, the north and the east most likely refers to Europe, Russia, and/or China.

The Battle of Armageddon

45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him. (Daniel 11: 44-45)

The Antichrist will eventually gather his armies at Armageddon (between the seas near the beautiful holy mountain). He brings his armies in a place where the can prepare to annihilate the remnant of Israel. But he will come to his end and no one will help him. (See: What is the Return of Jesus Christ?)
